2024 Field Trip:  Fort Monroe and Lee Hall Mansion

On Saturday, October 26, Round Table members went on a day-long

field trip to Fort Monroe and Lee Hall Mansion.  We had a very

interesting Civil War-focused tour by Dr. Francoise Bonnell, Director of Museums, Education, and Interpretation for the Fort Monroe Authority.  After lunch we visited and toured Lee Hall Mansion, which served as headquarters

for both Maj. Gen. John Bankhead Magruder and Gen. Joseph E. Johnston

during April and May 1862.

 2022 Field Trip:  Lexington, Virginia

On Saturday, June 11, fourteen members and friends of the round table went on a bus trip to Lexington, VA.  We visited Jackson Memorial Hall with the New Market Mural, the VMI Museum (and had a close up look at some of the artifacts in their collection), and got a tour of the campus by a cadet.  We then visited the Stonewall Jackson House and concluded a full day at Oak Grove Cemetery where Stonewall Jackson's grave is located along with other Confederate notables.

2019 Field Trip: North Anna and the Overland Campaign, 1864

Forty-two members and friends of the round table explored parts of the Overland Campaign with our incomparable guide, Bobby Krick. Carmel Church, Jericho Mill, and Ox Ford, all parts of the North Anna Battle, were explored in the morning. Lunch was enjoyed in the fellowship hall of the beautiful and historic Fork Church in Doswell, built in 1735. The afternoon tour followed the Federal Army to the Pamunkey River while we drove by several sites associated with their march. We ended our full day with stops at the cavalry battle site at Haw’s Shop and finally Totopotomoy Creek.

Some of the other annual field trips have included: City Point, Petersburg, and Five Forks in 2018; Aquia Landing and Quantico Marine Base in 2017; Stuart’s Ride around the Union Army in 2016; Appomattox in 2015; Bermuda Hundred Campaign in 2014; and Bristoe Station in 2013.
